BORDER I: Expanding the Boundaries of Fashion Photography
New Perspectives at the Intersection of Art and Fashion
BORDER I marked the launch of Collective Oslo’s exhibition series dedicated to artists redefining contemporary fashion photography. Bringing together internationally acclaimed image-makers from across Europe and the United States, the exhibition explored individuality, non-conformity, and the limitless possibilities of visual storytelling.
Presented in collaboration with Fineart in Oslo, the exhibition introduced audiences to a diverse collection of works that challenged traditional representations of beauty, identity, and fashion.
A Celebration of Distinct Artistic Voices
The artists featured in BORDER I each approached photography through highly personal and unconventional perspectives, creating a dialogue between fantasy, social commentary, memory, and contemporary culture.
Their practices share a willingness to challenge expectations while expanding the creative possibilities of image-making beyond commercial and editorial conventions.
Featured Artists
Katerina Plotnikova presented dreamlike photographic worlds where humans and wild animals coexist in poetic and surreal environments. Her imagery combined elements of folklore, fantasy, and nature to create visually striking narratives that blur the boundaries between reality and imagination.
Bessnyc4 challenged the aesthetics and structures of the fashion industry through provocative image compositions that combined luxury branding, internet culture, and subversive visual references. Their work questioned the mechanisms of desire, consumption, and image production.
Michal Pudelka explored themes of individuality and collective identity through photographs influenced by personal memories and the social landscape of post-communist Slovakia. His work balanced humour, surrealism, and emotional depth while examining the tension between belonging and difference.
Charlotte Wales presented a deeply personal body of work that moved between innocence and provocation, creating ethereal visual spaces that investigated youth, vulnerability, and self-discovery.
Johnny Dufort's photographs combined raw energy with surreal interventions, constructing visually manipulated realities that challenged conventional notions of beauty and fashion imagery.
Coco Capitán brought together photography and her now-signature handwritten texts, poems, and aphorisms. Through this combination, she reflected on contemporary life, identity, and the contradictions of modern society with both sincerity and humour.
Our Approach
With BORDER, Collective Oslo created a platform dedicated to artists working at the intersection of art and fashion. The series celebrates photographers and visual artists whose practices challenge conventions while introducing new perspectives to contemporary visual culture.
By bringing together artists from different countries, disciplines, and creative backgrounds, BORDER encourages dialogue between personal narratives and broader cultural conversations.
