Exploring Identity Through a Digital Lens
In the Matrix — A Kate Moss Project presented an intimate and futuristic collaboration between photographer and filmmaker Dusan Reljin and fashion icon Kate Moss. Exhibited at Mellomstasjonen at the National Museum of Art in Oslo, the project explored the relationship between beauty, technology, and digital identity through a series of holographic portraits that challenge traditional perceptions of portraiture.
Blurring the boundaries between reality and simulation, the exhibition offered a glimpse into a world where human presence is transformed through technology while still retaining emotional resonance.
Reimagining an Icon
Using advanced holographic scanning techniques, Reljin captured Kate Moss in a form that feels simultaneously familiar and unrecognizable. The resulting portraits move beyond conventional photography, transforming one of the world’s most recognizable faces into fragmented, hyper-digital representations that exist between physical and virtual realities.
The works explore how technology reshapes identity, questioning what remains human when images become increasingly mediated, manipulated, and digitized.
Between Beauty and Artificiality
The portraits combine poetic sensitivity with technological precision. Distorted surfaces, fragmented forms, and luminous textures create a tension between vulnerability and artificiality, generating images that feel both intimate and distant.
Rather than documenting a person, the project investigates the evolving nature of representation itself, reflecting on how digital technologies continue to alter our understanding of presence, memory, and self-image.
Materializing the Virtual
To enhance the illusion of depth and dimensionality, the holographic works were produced as Chromaluxe prints. The material’s reflective qualities amplified the visual intensity of the images, extending their three-dimensional appearance while adding vibrancy and luminosity to the digital forms.
The result was an immersive visual experience where technology became both subject and medium.
Our Approach
Collective Oslo presented In the Matrix — A Kate Moss Project as part of its ongoing commitment to showcasing artists who challenge the boundaries of contemporary visual culture. By bringing together photography, film, digital technology, and portraiture, the exhibition explored how emerging technologies are transforming artistic expression and image-making.
Set within the National Museum of Art, the project created a dialogue between contemporary digital experimentation and the broader history of portraiture.
