Malin Bülow: Exploring Human Connection Through Elastic Sculpture
Site-specific installations at the intersection of body, space, and movement
Malin Bülow (b. 1979, Sweden) is a visual artist based in Oslo, Norway. Working across sculpture, installation, and performance, she creates large-scale elastic environments that investigate the relationship between bodies, space, perception, and human interaction. Her practice often unfolds through collaborations with contemporary dancers, resulting in works that remain in a constant state of transformation.
Bülow holds an MFA from the National Academy of Fine Art in Oslo, a BFA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, an MSc in Neuroscience from VU University Amsterdam, and a BSc in Molecular Biology from Lund University. Her works have been presented at institutions and venues including the Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art, Vigeland Park, the Oslo Opera House, Lustwarande, and Malmö Art Museum.
Between Science and Art
Before fully dedicating herself to art, Bülow pursued studies in neuroscience and molecular biology. This scientific background continues to inform her artistic practice, shaping her interest in perception, systems, human behaviour, and the invisible forces that influence how we experience the world.
Living in Amsterdam during her twenties became a turning point. After completing her master's degree in neuroscience and becoming a mother, she chose to follow a creative path and begin formal studies in fine art—a decision she describes as one of the clearest and most certain of her life.
Creating What Words Cannot Express
At the core of Bülow’s work is a desire to communicate experiences that cannot easily be articulated through language. Drawing inspiration from literature, human relationships, memory, and the complexity of social structures, she creates immersive environments that invite physical and emotional engagement.
Her elastic sculptures act as living systems, continuously shifting through movement and interaction, encouraging viewers to reconsider their relationship to both their surroundings and one another.
Our Approach
Malin Bülow’s artistic practice combines site-specific installation, performance, and spatial experimentation. Working with materials that stretch, contract, and respond to movement, she creates temporary worlds that blur boundaries between sculpture, architecture, and choreography.
Her projects often transform public and institutional spaces into environments where viewers become participants, exploring themes of connection, vulnerability, perception, and bodily awareness. Through scale, materiality, and movement, Bülow creates experiences that are both intimate and monumental.
