COLLECTIVE x National Museum: Transforming Cultural Space Into a Contemporary Creative Festival

Setting the Scene

Described by 10 Magazine as “all about being challenged, provoked, and pleasantly surprised,” the COLLECTIVE Festival established itself as an important cultural platform for emerging art, fashion, and contemporary creative expression in Norway. Through exhibitions, performances, talks, and live experiences, the festival created a meeting point between audiences, artists, and new forms of cultural storytelling.

Transforming the Museum Experience

Following an earlier collaboration through the UNCONTAMINATED festival, COLLECTIVE and the National Museum of Norway launched a second large scale collaboration in October 2018. Over two days, the National Museum’s Mellomstasjonen venue in Oslo was transformed into an immersive cultural landscape combining exhibitions, live conversations, performances, events, and nightlife experiences under one continuous festival format.

Creating a Multidisciplinary Cultural Platform

The festival unfolded as a layered experience where audiences could move fluidly between artistic disciplines, performances, and social encounters throughout the venue. Exhibitions and installations coexisted with TALKS, live events, and evening parties, creating an atmosphere balancing intellectual exchange with contemporary youth culture and artistic experimentation.

More than 4500 visitors attended the festival across the two days, while the live streamed TALKS reached thousands of additional viewers digitally through COLLECTIVE’s online platforms. Since its inception, the festival has generated a digital reach of more than seven million people and established itself as a pioneering arena for contemporary art and cultural discussion in Norway. The livestreamed conversations from the 2017 edition alone reached approximately 2000 viewers per talk through Facebook, extending the festival experience beyond the physical venue itself.

Our Approach

Our approach focused on reimagining the museum as a living social and cultural environment rather than a static exhibition space. Together with the National Museum, COLLECTIVE developed a multidisciplinary festival format where art, fashion, performance, digital culture, and public conversation could intersect organically across physical and digital platforms.

COLLECTIVE led the concept development, creative direction, programming, and production of the festival experience, shaping everything from spatial atmosphere and audience flow to TALKS programming and live event production. By combining exhibitions, livestreamed conversations, performances, and nightlife into one cohesive experience, the collaboration transformed Mellomstasjonen into a dynamic platform for contemporary cultural exchange while expanding the accessibility and reach of the festival beyond the museum walls.

National Museum x 2020 x Tori Wrånes: Celebrating Contemporary Art Through Community and Performance

Setting the Scene

In collaboration with the National Museum of Norway and its patron initiative 2020, COLLECTIVE developed and produced an event celebrating the donation of works by Tori Wrånes to the museum collection. The event combined performance, exhibition, and social gathering into an immersive cultural experience centered around contemporary art and community engagement.

Connecting Art and Audience

The event was created to strengthen engagement between younger audiences and contemporary art through a format balancing artistic experimentation with social interaction. Inspired by international patron programs at institutions such as Tate, Guggenheim, and MoMA, the initiative 2020 aimed to build a new generation of collectors, supporters, and cultural participants under the age of forty within the Norwegian art scene.

Performance, Atmosphere, and Cultural Exchange

Developed as more than a traditional museum event, the evening transformed the institutional setting into a dynamic social and artistic environment where audiences could experience contemporary art through participation and atmosphere. Centered around the work of Tori Wrånes, the program merged performance, exhibition, music, and gathering into a shared cultural moment celebrating artistic experimentation and collective engagement.

The event reflected the broader ambitions of the 2020 initiative by creating an accessible and socially driven framework around contemporary art. Through immersive experiences and community oriented programming, the collaboration encouraged dialogue between artists, audiences, collectors, and cultural institutions while reinforcing the museum as an active and evolving meeting place for younger generations.

Our Approach

Our approach focused on creating a cultural event where contemporary art could be experienced socially, emotionally, and physically rather than through passive observation alone. By combining performance, exhibition, and nightlife inspired elements, COLLECTIVE developed an environment encouraging interaction, curiosity, and participation around the work of Tori Wrånes and the mission of the 2020 initiative.

COLLECTIVE led the creative direction and production of the event, shaping the atmosphere, audience experience, and artistic framing throughout the evening. Through immersive staging and multidisciplinary programming, the collaboration balanced institutional credibility with youthful energy, helping position the museum as a more accessible and socially connected cultural space for a new generation of art audiences.
