Roger Ballen: Ballenesque
Entering a World Between Dream and Reality
Ballenesque was a retrospective exhibition presenting the distinctive and psychologically charged universe of internationally renowned artist and photographer Roger Ballen. Through a carefully curated selection of photographs, moving images, projections, and immersive installations, the exhibition invited audiences into a world where reality dissolves into dream, memory, instinct, and subconscious imagination.
Presented in a transformed circus tent at Aker Brygge in Oslo, the exhibition offered a rare opportunity to experience Ballen’s work as a complete environment rather than a collection of individual images.
The Ballenesque Universe
Over the course of his career, Roger Ballen has developed a visual language unlike any other in contemporary photography. Moving beyond documentary and traditional photographic representation, his work explores the psychological landscape of the human condition through symbols, drawings, objects, animals, performers, and constructed environments.
In Ballen’s images, photography merges with drawing, sculpture, installation, and performance. Reality and fiction coexist, creating scenes that feel simultaneously familiar and unsettling.
The exhibition highlighted this evolution, showcasing works where hand-drawn elements, found materials, and sculptural interventions become integral components of the image itself.
Beyond Photography
Rather than documenting the external world, Ballen’s work investigates internal states of mind. His images function as visual manifestations of dreams, fears, memories, and subconscious impulses, inviting viewers to confront ambiguity and uncertainty.
Influenced by traditions ranging from Art Brut to experimental photography, his practice creates spaces where order and chaos, humour and darkness, beauty and discomfort continuously intersect.
Sound, Space, and Immersion
To deepen the emotional experience of the exhibition, Norwegian sound artist Timon Botez developed a site-specific soundscape that accompanied the works. The composition amplified the psychological atmosphere of the exhibition, creating an immersive environment where image and sound merged into a unified experience.
The exhibition also featured a virtual reality experience initiated by Collective Oslo and produced by OONI Studio in New York. The VR component expanded Ballen’s universe into a fully navigable digital environment, allowing audiences to engage with his work from entirely new perspectives.
Our Approach
Produced by Collective Oslo in collaboration with Willas Contemporary Gallery, Ballenesque transformed an unconventional venue into a total artistic environment. Combining photography, film, sound, projection, and virtual reality, the exhibition explored how audiences can experience visual art beyond the traditional gallery format.
The project reflected Collective Oslo’s ongoing commitment to creating immersive cultural experiences that challenge expectations and expand the possibilities of exhibition-making.

“The images I create, I create not to inform. They are much rather meant to be understood as a coherent commentary on the chaos in our incomprehensible world.”
— Roger Ballen
