Johanna Warberg: Building Playful Worlds Through Illustration and Textile Art
Blending illustration, tufting, and design into vibrant visual universes
Illustrator, designer, tufter, and artist Johanna Warberg creates colorful worlds populated by curious characters, playful narratives, and unexpected visual encounters. Originally from Stavanger and based in Oslo, Warberg combines illustration, textile art, and graphic design to create work that balances humor, imagination, and personal storytelling.
A Practice Rooted in Play
At the time of UNWRAPPED, Warberg was completing her Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design and Illustration at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO). Her artistic universe draws inspiration from popular culture, gaming, nostalgia, and the freedom of imaginative play, often transforming everyday observations into vibrant visual narratives.
Whether working digitally, through tufted textiles, or with illustration, her work embraces spontaneity and curiosity, allowing unexpected characters and stories to emerge organically throughout the creative process.
Creating Alternative Realities
Warberg’s playful references to Pokémon, fantasy worlds, and fictional adventures reveal an artistic approach centered around imagination and exploration. Through bold colors, expressive forms, and a distinctive visual language, she creates works that invite viewers into alternative realities where humor and creativity take precedence over convention.
Her practice reflects a desire to preserve the sense of wonder often associated with childhood while translating it into contemporary visual culture.
Our Approach
Johanna Warberg's contribution to UNWRAPPED showcased her unique approach to illustration, tufting, and visual storytelling. Through a combination of handcrafted textile works and graphic expression, she introduced audiences to a universe that felt both personal and accessible.
As part of a multidisciplinary exhibition featuring artists from fashion, architecture, digital art, styling, and visual storytelling, her work demonstrated how illustration and textile practices can create strong emotional connections through color, character, and narrative.
Her contribution embodied the spirit of UNWRAPPED: celebrating emerging talent, creative freedom, and the value of artistic experimentation.
