Henriette Sagfjord: Photography as Therapy
Exploring emotion, mental health, and self-expression through visual storytelling
Henriette Sagfjord (b. 1997, Norway) is an art photographer and Leica Ambassador based in Oslo. Through self-portraiture, staged photography, and atmospheric visual narratives, she explores themes of mental health, identity, vulnerability, and emotional connection. Her work often exists in a dreamlike space between reality and imagination, creating intimate visual stories that invite reflection and recognition.
Having discovered photography as a way to process her own experiences with depression, Sagfjord has developed a distinctive artistic language rooted in emotion, symbolism, and personal storytelling.
From Personal Healing to Artistic Practice
Photography began as a form of therapy for Sagfjord. Struggling to express difficult emotions through words, she found visual storytelling to be a powerful tool for self-understanding and communication.
Over time, this personal process evolved into a broader artistic practice focused on creating images that others can relate to. Through her work, she seeks to foster openness around mental health and encourage conversations about emotions that are often left unspoken.
Creating Beyond Reality
A turning point in Sagfjord’s creative development came when she discovered surreal photography. Rather than documenting what she saw, she became interested in creating images based on imagination, emotion, and inner experiences.
Inspired by music, nature, light, and fog-filled landscapes, her photographs often feel cinematic and symbolic. Through experimental compositions and carefully crafted atmospheres, she creates spaces where viewers can interpret and connect with the work through their own experiences.
Artist Reflection
"I use photography as therapy to express my emotions. It’s about connecting with myself and others through my pictures."
