Henrik Bach Mortensen: Reinventing Identity Through Creativity

Exploring transformation, self-expression, and imagination through makeup, styling, and artistic experimentation

Makeup artist and stylist Henrik Bach Mortensen approaches creativity as both a personal practice and a form of transformation. Through makeup, styling, wigs, and visual experimentation, he continuously explores new identities, characters, and perspectives. Inspired by science fiction, horror, and the natural world, his work exists at the intersection of fantasy, beauty, and self-discovery.

Creativity as a Personal Journey

For Mortensen, creating is deeply connected to wellbeing and personal growth. During a difficult period in his life, creativity became a source of strength, reflection, and renewal. What began as a way of coping evolved into an essential part of his identity and artistic practice.

His fascination with making and transforming things began early. One of his first creative memories is sitting with his mother, sorting buttons and watching her sew. The experience sparked an appreciation for craftsmanship, detail, and the process of creating something from nothing.

Constant Reinvention

Rather than defining himself through a single artistic expression, Mortensen embraces reinvention as a central part of his work. Through styling, makeup, and sculptural hair pieces, he continuously challenges expectations of identity, beauty, and presentation.

His work often balances the familiar and the uncanny, drawing inspiration from science fiction, horror aesthetics, and organic forms found in nature. The result is a visual universe that feels both playful and provocative, inviting audiences to reconsider how identity can be expressed and transformed.

Our Approach

Henrik Bach Mortensen's artistic practice is driven by curiosity and experimentation. Whether creating editorial looks, sculptural wigs, or conceptual styling projects, he approaches each project as an opportunity to explore new techniques and perspectives.

His contribution to UNWRAPPED reflected Collective Oslo’s ambition to showcase emerging creative voices across disciplines. Alongside artists working within digital art, fashion, illustration, architecture, and textile design, Mortensen presented work that expanded conventional ideas of beauty and self-expression.

By merging artistry, styling, and transformation, his work demonstrated how creative practice can become both a personal process and a powerful visual language.
