HEY AI, GOT SOUL?: Exploring Creativity Beyond the Code
A generative AI artwork examining authorship, consciousness, and the future of visual creation
As part of Collective Oslo’s exhibition program, visual designer Edmond Yang presented HEY AI, GOT SOUL?, an experimental moving-image work created through generative artificial intelligence. The project explored the relationship between human intention and machine-generated output, questioning whether creativity can emerge from code alone or if something more human remains embedded within the process.

His work often explores how new technologies can expand visual storytelling, challenge traditional workflows, and create entirely new forms of artistic experimentation.
Visualizing New Possibilities
HEY AI, GOT SOUL? was developed using advanced generative AI techniques, including Stable Diffusion, AnimateDiff, prompt engineering, and a series of post-production processes such as grading, interpolation, and upscaling. The final piece consists of five carefully selected sequences chosen from hundreds of generated variations.
Rather than presenting AI as a replacement for human creativity, the work investigates the dialogue between artist and machine. The project asks viewers to consider where authorship begins and ends, and whether meaning emerges from the algorithm itself or from the human choices that guide it.
Our Approach
The project was created through a process of experimentation, iteration, and curation. Hundreds of generated outputs were reviewed, refined, and directed toward a specific artistic vision. By combining technological tools with human intuition, Yang developed a work that reflects both the possibilities and limitations of contemporary AI-generated image-making.
The exhibition highlighted Collective Oslo’s interest in emerging technologies and their impact on culture, art, and visual communication. Through HEY AI, GOT SOUL?, audiences were invited to engage with questions surrounding creativity, identity, and the rapidly evolving relationship between humans and machines.
