Award-winning photographic artist Mark Francis Fenning uses analogue photography as a tool for exploring identity, masculinity, and personal transformation. Based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, his work investigates how individuals construct, perform, and redefine themselves over time. Through Polaroid photography, collage, emulsion lifts, and alternative photographic processes, he creates images that challenge fixed notions of selfhood while embracing vulnerability, ambiguity, and change.
The Personal as a Creative Foundation
Fenning’s work is deeply autobiographical. While often centered on broader themes of masculinity and representation, the images originate from personal experiences, reflections, and observations. For him, identity is not a fixed condition but an ongoing process shaped by memory, relationships, environment, and lived experience.
This belief has become a central theme throughout his practice, where portraiture serves as both a documentation of others and a reflection of his own evolving perspective.
Discovering Photography
A defining moment in Fenning’s artistic development occurred during his studies at art school. Originally focused on printmaking, he was encouraged by his tutor, Bill Penney, to explore photography after being told that his photographic work held greater strength than his drawings. The conversation redirected his creative path and led him toward photographic printmaking, alternative processes, and ultimately his distinctive use of Polaroid imagery.
Since then, he has become internationally recognized for his experimental approach to analogue photography, creating works that merge traditional photographic techniques with contemporary questions surrounding identity and representation.
Our Approach
Fenning’s artistic practice balances technical experimentation with conceptual inquiry. Through the physicality of instant film and handmade photographic processes, he creates work that feels both intimate and tactile. The imperfections, textures, and unpredictability of analogue materials become integral parts of the final image, reinforcing themes of transformation and impermanence.
His collaboration with Collective Oslo reflects a shared interest in contemporary visual culture, artistic dialogue, and multidisciplinary creative exchange. Through portraiture and photographic experimentation, Fenning continues to explore how identity shifts and evolves, encouraging viewers to reconsider assumptions about masculinity, selfhood, and representation.
His work has been exhibited internationally, and alongside his artistic practice, he serves on the board of Source Magazine and participates in initiatives supporting emerging creative talent within Northern Ireland.
