Designer and creative technologist Kim Andre Fosslien Ottesen is driven by curiosity and a desire to explore uncharted territory. As co-founder of the exploratory design and technology studio Opening Hours, he develops projects that combine design, technology, identity, and cultural storytelling. Prior to founding Opening Hours, Ottesen spent more than a decade working at renowned studios including Snøhetta and Heydays, contributing to award-winning projects for clients such as Google, Wikipedia, the Munch Museum, Vestre, Le Monde Group, and artist Bjarne Melgaard.
Curiosity as a Creative Method
For Ottesen, creativity begins with exploration. Rather than focusing on predetermined outcomes, he is motivated by discovering new possibilities and understanding how people interact with technology, culture, and one another.
This curiosity has shaped his career from an early age. A pivotal moment came when he first learned to write code as a twelve-year-old. Understanding how to communicate with computers and create digital systems opened an entirely new way of thinking about creativity, problem-solving, and the relationship between humans and technology.
Designing Future Experiences
Throughout his work, Ottesen has explored how technology influences identity, communication, and human behavior. He is particularly interested in how emerging technologies create new ways for individuals to express themselves across both physical and digital environments.
As technological development accelerates, he sees opportunities for people to build multiple versions of themselves and navigate increasingly fluid relationships between online and offline experiences. His work frequently examines these evolving dynamics while remaining grounded in human-centered design principles.
Our Approach
Kim Andre Fosslien Ottesen collaborated with Collective Oslo through the project SNØHETTA + COLLECTIVE OSLO – Co-Creation with The Machines, which resulted in the development of Collective Oslo’s visual identity.
His practice combines strategic thinking, design systems, emerging technologies, and experimental methodologies to create meaningful experiences and visual languages. Through Opening Hours and previous collaborations, he continues to explore how design can serve as a bridge between technology, culture, and human connection.
