OFFBEAT 2018: Exploring Youth Culture Between Handcraft and Digital Expression
Setting the Scene
OFFBEAT 2018 was a multidisciplinary group exhibition presenting emerging Nordic artists working across painting, fashion, digital art, installation, photography, and performance. Developed in collaboration between COLLECTIVE and the National Museum of Norway, the exhibition explored how contemporary youth culture navigates identity, technology, and artistic expression within an increasingly digital world.
Curating a New Creative Landscape
Hosted at the National Museum’s Mellomstasjonen venue in Oslo, OFFBEAT transformed the exhibition space into a series of immersive artistic environments where traditional craftsmanship intersected with digital experimentation. The exhibition focused on the relationship between physical materiality and technology driven aesthetics, inviting visitors into highly distinct worlds created by each participating artist and designer.
Art, Fashion, and Digital Experimentation
For OFFBEAT 2018, COLLECTIVE developed scenographic environments tailored to the artistic language of each contributor. Edda Gimnes’ installation became a blooming surrealist landscape filled with oversized floral prints and sculptural fashion pieces, while Kit Wan’ universe explored futurism and high technology aesthetics.
Artists including Berglind Rognvaldsdottir, Guttestreker, Eirik Lyster, Lieu Le, and Adrian Platkovsky presented live performances, digital works, paintings, photography, and immersive installations throughout the museum. Visitors encountered animated projections layered onto traditional paintings, surreal environments encouraging conversations around sexuality and identity, and dreamlike scenographic interventions balancing humor, experimentation, and social reflection. More than 4500 visitors attended the exhibition, transforming the museum into a living meeting place for artists, audiences, and emerging creative communities.
Our Approach
Our approach focused on creating an exhibition format where fashion, art, technology, and youth culture could coexist without hierarchy. Rather than presenting works as isolated objects, COLLECTIVE developed OFFBEAT as an immersive cultural environment where audiences could move fluidly between installations, performances, conversations, and digital experiences.
COLLECTIVE led the curatorial development, spatial storytelling, and production of the exhibition together with the National Museum. Each artistic contribution was approached as its own universe while remaining connected through a shared exploration of digital identity, craftsmanship, and contemporary visual culture. By combining scenography, live performance, projection, sound design, and installation art, OFFBEAT became a platform for emerging Nordic voices while questioning how artistic expression evolves in the intersection between physical and digital realities.
